Description

For many years researchers have been annoyed with, rather than curious about, a natural phenomenon called ball lightning, a sustained spherical circulation of charge. It is usually regarded as a transient effect, resulting from a sudden change in electrical flow, as often happens when flipping a switch. Nikola Tesla was perhaps the first to seriously study the cause and nature of ball lightning. Today it's possible to reproduce this fascinating effect right inside your own microwave oven. Science hobbyist Bill Beaty shows us how.
